HYDERABAD, Nov 7: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has expressed concern over the proposed privatization of Jamshoro, Kotri and Lakhra powerhouses.
In a statement issued from the zonal office of MQM, the members of the Sindh Assembly belonging to the MQM said that these three powerhouses were earning huge profits and paying taxes to the government to the tune of tens of millions of rupees per annum.
The MPAs reminded the government that it had already suffered huge losses due to privatization and agreements with the IPP.
They claimed that privatization of the above powerhouse was not in the interest of the government.
They said that thousands of workers would be rendered jobless.
They appealed to the president and prime minister to stop the privatization of powerhouses with a view to protecting the future of thousands of workers.
DEMO: Activists of the Pakistan Trade Union Defence Campaign held a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Friday against the Karachi Steel Mill administration.
They carried placards inscribed with slogans against the mill chairman.
Speaking on the occasion, Anwar Panhwar, Pir Muhammad Sindhi, Purshutam and Mangal said the mill administration had terminated the services of 6,500 workers.
They demanded that downsizing in the mill should be stopped, retrenched workers be reinstated and the chairman of the mill be removed.
FINED: Deputy District Officers (DDOs) on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs4,750 over seven shop keepers and fruit sellers for violating official price lists.
The officials during their surprise visits found the men charging rates higher than those mentioned in the lists, issued by the district government.
