ISLAMABAD, Nov 3: The National Assembly on Monday set up a 26-member special committee, including some prominent figures from the ruling coalition and the opposition parties, to promote the cause of Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination at home and abroad.

The committee consists of 16 members from the ruling coalition and 10 from Opposition parties named in a list given by the government in a motion moved by ruling party chief whip and Labour and Manpower Minister Abdul Sattar Laleka.

The National Assembly approved four-point terms of references for the new committee, which has yet to elect its chairman. These points are:

— Monitor violations of human rights and atrocities being committed by Indian forces in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

— Mobilise world opinion in support of the cause of right of self-determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir as well as the stand the government of Pakistan.

— Solicit and provide political, moral and diplomatic support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their just struggle for their right to self-determination in accordance with UN resolutions.

— Consider and decide such other issues and matters relating to these objectives which may be referred to it by the House from time to time.

Sixteen committee members from the ruling coalition are: Syed Tasneem Nawaz Gardezi (PML-Q), Makhdoom Syed Ahmad Alam Anwar Ind), Syed Mohammad Asghar Shah (PML-Q), Mrs Zeb Gohar Ayub (PML- Q), Chaudhry Shahbaz Hussain (PML-Q), Mohammad Sanaullah Khan (PML-Q), Nawab Amanullah Khan (PML-Q), Attiya Inayatullah (PML- Q), Malik Allah Yar Khan (PML-Q), Sardar Mohammad Nasrullah Dreshak (PML-Q), Mohammad Wasi Zafar (PML-Q), Chaudhry Anwar Ali Cheema (PML-Q), Mohammad Tahirul Qadri (PAT), Mrs Shabina Talat (MQM), Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari (N.A.), Hamid Nasir Chattha (PML-J).

Ten members from opposition parties are: Amir Muqam (MMA), Raja Pervez Ashraf (PPP), Makhdoom Amin Fahim (PPP), Mrs Naheed Khan (PPP), Nawab Mohammad Yousuf Talpur (PPP), Imran Khan (PAT), Maulana Asadullah (MMA), Qazi Hussain Ahmad (MMA), Maulana Fazlur Rehman (MMA) and Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz (MMA).
