PESHAWAR, Oct 24: PPP chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim said on Friday that his group would work out its strategy whether or not to support the amendment bill on Hudood Ordinance.

The proposed amendment, to be tabled by PPP member Sherry Rehman, has put the combined opposition in a dilemma.

The six-party conglomerate of religious outfits — MMA — has vowed to oppose the bill.

Fahim was here to address the public meeting of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy.

He told a group of newsmen at the residence of PPP provincial chief Khwaja Muhammad Khan Hoti that the bill had been submitted as private member’s bill and would be taken up for discussion on private members’ day when the National Assembly meets again.

“Every member has the right to move a bill on private members’ day”, he said.

But a cautious Fahim added that his group would consult other opposition groups in the National Assembly when the bill comes up for discussion.

The bill seeks to amend the controversial law which human rights and women rights activists say is being widely misused.

The PPP leader, who is also the ARD chairman, condemned what he described as “violence perpetrated against the local tribal population” in the name of hunting down Al Qaeda militants.

“Perpetrating violence against tribal people and searching their houses is condemnable. We cannot accept this,” he said.

Fahim said the ARD, together with other opposition groups including the MMA, would discuss whether any change was required in the opposition’s tactics and strategy in the National Assembly.

He said the PPP and PML-N were unanimous in opposing the Legal Framework Order. “Our stand is based on principles that no individual, even the Supreme Court, has the right to amend the Constitution.”

He, however, conceded that the MMA was showing flexibility on the LFO. “I am afraid I cannot comment on that,” he remarked.

He said the ARD had invited the ANP to join its ranks and talks on this issue would resume in the near future.

Asked whether his party would support a no-confidence move against the MMA government in the NWFP, Makhdoom Amin Fahim said that any decision in this regard would be taken after consultation with the party leadership. “This is a bit premature. But we will not take any step that would harm democracy.”

He paid rich tributes to the late Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan.
