PESHAWAR, Oct 23: A general body meeting of the Peshawar University Teachers Association (Puta) rejected the Model University Ordinance in its present shape, saying that the protest would be extended to all colleges and schools in the province.

The meeting observed that the vested interest had produced the document without any consultation with stakeholders, adding that its implementation would spoil the peaceful atmosphere of educational institutions.

The vested interest had become active to please their foreign masters and vitiate the education atmosphere in the country, the meeting said and urged the government to set up a high-level commission that must include teachers, parents, students and elected representatives.

The commission should review the 1974 Act and remove flaws and deficiencies from it, the meeting observed, adding that its recommendations should first be sent to the National Assembly and then to all the provincial assemblies so that it could be passed as an Act.

Later, the Puta members held a peaceful march on the campus to register their opposition to the MUO.
