Sindh govt warned against interference in local polls

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Oct 14: President of People’s Party Parliamentarian Makhdoom Amin Fahim has condemned the arrest and harassment of councillors in Kot Digi in Khairpur district in Sindh on the occasion of elections for Tehsil Nazim to be held later this month.

In a statement on Tuesday, Makhdoom Amin Fahim condemned the harassment and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incidents.

He warned the local administration of dire consequences if it continued to harass the councillors to advance the political agenda of the rulers.

He said the PPP was preparing a list of officials of local administration, who were acting in a manner of more loyal than the king.

The PPP leader also warned the provincial government of Sindh of serious consequences if it did not end interference in the local bodies elections.

The PPP is determined not to allow any gerrymandering in the elections, he said and warned that the responsibility of the consequences would be squarely that of the provincial government.

“The councillors arrested on flimsy and baseless ground and added that the PPP would not be deterred by such intimidation and pressure tactics.

Mr Fahim also urged the chief election commissioner to intervene and fulfil his constitutional obligation of holding fair and free elections. The PPP leader said he would also take up the matter with international human rights groups and elections watchdog bodies.
