KARACHI, Oct 11: Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan paid surprise visits to various city areas on Friday night and inspected various development works.
The Nazim inspected the patchwork at Shahrah-i-Liaquat and the road opposite National Bank Head Office.
On the occasion, in a briefing the Nazim was informed that so far one million sq feet of repair work had been carried out and it has provided a lot of relief to people.
Naimatullah directed that patch-work be expedited further but quality of work be strictly maintained as there would be no compromise on it.
He said that he had formed various teams to monitor the quality aspect of the work being done and he himself would be paying surprise visits.
NIPA FORUM: Speaking at the NIPA Forum on Friday night, the Nazim said that he presented the first Rs 20.5 billion budget in 2002 which is bigger than previous budgets.
He gave details about the administrative structure of the CDGK which has 18 towns and 178 union councils.
Naimatullah said as octroi was disbanded, the government granted an equivalent amount, but without 15 per cent annual increase.
In education sector, he said, schools were in a dilapidated condition and were without water and toilets. But now the condition of schools has been improved.
As the quality of education was poor in government schools, the teacher’s training programmes were introduced, including Nazira Quran courses.
Referring to Karachi Mass Transit system, Naimatullah Khan said seven foreign companies, including three Chinese, two Malaysian, a British and an American company, have shown interest in the project and they have been offered contracts on BOT basis.
The Nazim informed that since he joined his office, three flyovers were approved, out of which one has been completed and work on two is in progress.
He informed that he had discussed an acute water and sewerage problem with the president.
He said about 700,000 to 800,000 people are added to Karachi every year. There is no master plan for Karachi, no solid waste management and garbage disposal and mass transit systems here.
