Dist govt offers investment: Sida projects

By Our Correspondent

SUKKUR, Oct 4: The district Nazim has said that he has asked the Sindh Government to allow his district government to contribute towards the Sida’s projects by offering 10 per cent investment in the projects.

The Nazim, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah was speaking at a meeting of the World Bank officials and the Sindh Irrigation Drainage Authority chief with the farmers’ organizations (FOs) at circuit house here on Saturday.

Mr Shah said that the district government would offer maximum help in making the Sida-run projects successful.

He hoped that the Sida projects would streamline irrigation system in Sukkur district.

He emphasized the need for launching a motivation campaign among the farming community on Sida’s role which, he said, would ensure the success of the projects.

The managing director, Sida, Rafiq A. Safi Munshi, in his keynote address, portrayed a bleak picture of the existing canals, distributaries and watercourses in Sindh.

Lamenting that a lot of water went wasted due to weak linings of the waterways, he said that President Gen Pervaiz Musharraf had pledged to provide Rs30 billion for cementing and streamlining the waterways of Sindh even without seeking a green signal from the Executive Committee of National Economic Council.

Out of the amount, Mr Munshi said, Rs17 billion was likely to be used for the remodelling and strengthening of Nara Canal.

Regarding the working of Sida, he explained that it was a part of devolution of power plan, under which the FOs would have a say in running water distribution system.

He ruled out the interference of bureaucracy in the working of the FOs and said that the World Bank officials would monitor the working of the FOs which would participate in the water distribution process under the guidelines of the Sida engineers/experts.

He warned that the WB would not finance the projects unless it was sure about the participatory role of the FOs and called upon the farmers to form their organizations and prepare workable irrigation schemes for which sufficient funds were available with Sida.

He justified the role of Sida on the ground of rampant corruption, malpractice and negligence in the irrigation department, which had resulted in the collapse of the water distribution system.

Workshop: A workshop on the customer management training was organized by the National Database and Registration Authority at its regional headquarters, Sukkur, where Khushhali Bank executive director Ozair A. Hanafi was the guest speaker.

He delivered a lecture on the subject, highlighting topics such as the Power of Positive Mental Attitude, the Power of Managing Crowds, the Power of Managing Stress, the Power of Customer Connection, the Power of Effective Communication, the Power of Managing Time and the Power of One-to-One Relationship.

During the lecture, the main emphasis was on customer management. The assistant managers of RHQ NADRA, Sukkur, Karachi and Quetta participated in the workshop.
