Police performance criticized

SARGODHA, Oct 3: Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi said on Friday that he had provided all facilities to police with the undertaking that they would mend their ways, improve their working and control crime within a one-month deadline, but they had so far failed to come up to his expectations.

Addressing a mammoth gathering some 30km from here in Bhagtanwala, he said that he would personally monitor the working of police and not tolerate any negligence or sluggishness.

Provincial ministers Aamer Sultan Cheema and Mian Manazir Ali Ranjha, MNA Chaudhry Anwar Ali Cheema, MNA Ghias Ahmed Mela, MPAs Shoaib Awan, Rab Nawaz Luk and Zahida Sarfraz and district Nazim Malik Amjad Ali Noon were among those present on the occasion.

The chief minister warned all the government functionaries of the Punjab against corrupt practices and asked them to perform their duties honestly.

The CM said: “We have decided to provide residential plots to homeless people all over province and land to landless farmers.” He said proprietary rights were being given to 550 deserving people on Friday irrespective of their political affiliation.

Addressing another public meeting in Sillanwali, the chief minister said that the government was trying to bring the living standards in rural areas on a par with the urban. He said he had directed the authorities concerned to ensure provision of chairs and tables in all primary schools of rural areas.

The CM announced a development package for Bhagtanwala and Sillanwali.

He directed the revenue officer to reassess the value of shops constructed on a state land in Bhagtanwala, saying that price of a shop should not exceed Rs50,000. He announced a grant for the provision of two buses for a girls college and construction of a spacious hall at the Government Girls Degree College in Bhagtanawala.

He also announced that he would take up the case of provision of gas to Bhagtanwala with the federal government. He added that the hospital of Bhagtanawala would be upgraded to a 100-bed facility.

He announced Rs50 million for the construction and repair of streets, roads and drainage and sewerage systems in Sillanwali.

He announced Rs100 million for the development of Sargodha tehsil, adding that Rs150 million had been released to the district government.

Earlier, Chaudhry Anwar Ali Cheema in the address of welcome said that he had been elected from this area six times, but the area was ignored by various governments. He thanked the chief minister for issuing a special grant for his constituency and the Punjab governor for providing Rs50 million for the construction of Sial Morr Motorway interchange.

He criticized the district Nazim for “ignoring his and his son Aamer Sultan Cheema’s constituencies”.

The CM had announced a special grant of Rs20 million for the Cheemas’ constituencies.
