GHALLANAI (Mohmand Agency), Oct 3: Four miners were killed and four other critically injured when massive mudslide hit them while working in a marble quarry of Lakaro tehsil here on Thursday evening.

The political authorities and local tribesmen rushed to the area and initiated rescue work. It was feared that death toll might increase as other workers were also present in the mine at the time of the incident.

The miners were busy working in the marble quarry located at the Ziarat area of Lakaro tehsil, some 50km from Ghallanai, the agency headquarters, on Thursday evening when the accident occurred.

The tribesmen and administration officials recovered a body, identified as Obaidur Rehman who had died on the spot, while seven were found critically injured.

Later, three of them succumbed to their injuries. They were identified as Behram Khan, Meraj and Khulqat Khan.

Two of the injured were identified as Mohammad Kameen Jan and Khalid while the names of the other two could not be ascertained.

The groups of Garan Mullah and Bakht Mohammad Mian developed a dispute over the ownership of a piece of land in the far-flung Dawezai area of the Mohmand agency, resulting in increased animosity between the two men and their supporters.

On Wednesday night, Bakht Mohammad’s men attacked Garan Mullah’s house with rockets and other modern weapons, killing Ajmal, son of Fazal Rahim, and Karim, son of Bazurg.

Another man of Garan Mullah group, Gul Taj, son of Bazurg, was seriously injured in the attack.

The two groups continued to pound each other’s positions with modern weapons for several hours, which resulted in the destruction of Garan Mullah’s house.
