KARACHI: KU hires faculty for IT education


KARACHI, Sept 24: The vice-chancellor of Karachi University, Dr Zafar Saeed Saify, has said that highly trained and foreign qualified faculty has been hired for computer science department and preparation of advance IT courses is underway.

The vice-chancellor was speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of “Inter-varsities software developing and quiz competition” at Shaikh Zayed Islamic Centre.

He said that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) was providing huge grants and expertise for introducing wireless internet technology and video-conferencing facilities through which lectures held at KU or other varsities would be shared by students and faculties across the country.

Dr Saify said that the HEC was giving every possible assistance to the University of Karachi in acquiring the latest technologies in IT and computer engineering.

“Days are not far when computer-literate students of this varsity would be serving at every major institution in the world,” he said while felicitating the organizers and students, who participated in the competition.

Students from over 15 varsities, including Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET), Shaheed Z.A Bhutto Institute of Technology (SZABIST), National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Usman Institute of Technology (UIT), Fatima Jinnah University for Women, the University of Karachi, Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Aligarh Institute of Technology, NED University of Engineering and Technology, Bahria University and others had exhibited their interesting and informative software.

Later, Dr Saify distributed prizes among winners. The first prize was secured by the NED University team for its software Cool Urdu while second prize was bagged by the SZABIST team for preparing a software Madadgar.

In quiz competition, students of Karachi University secured the first prize while SSUET students bagged second prize.

Among others, Registrar KU Dr Fahimuddin, Naeemuddin, Amir Imam, Dr Khalil-ur-Rehman, Prof Aqil Burney and Prof Nasir Tauheed spoke on the occasion.

ADMISSION PROCESS: The process of admissions at the University of Karachi for the academic session 2003-04 will commence from Oct 5.

The spokesman for Karachi University said that the vice- chancellor had constituted an admission committee in this respect.

The Dean of Arts Faculty, Prof Dr Abuzar Wajidi, will be the convener while Dr Mudassaruddin will be the Director of the admission committee. Prof Sikandar Mehdi, Prof Dr Mohammad Iqbal, Prof Dr Zahida Maqsood, Prof Afaq Ahmed Siddiqui, Dr Majid Mumtaz and Prof Dr Ishaq Mansoori will be the committee members.

According to the KU spokesman, the admission process will be completed by the end of this year while classes for the next academic session will commence from Jan 1, 2004.

POSTPONED: The interviews for research fellowship to be held at the University of Karachi have been postponed. This was announced by the university registrar on Wednesday. He said that a fresh date in this very respect would soon be notified.

APPOINTED: The vice-chancellor of Karachi University,

Dr Zafar Saeed Saify, has appointed Dr Junaid Sagheer Siddiqui of statistics department as the incharge of semester cell.

He would replace Dr Azeem of physiology department, who had been working as the incharge semester cell for the last many years.—PPI/APP
