PESHAWAR, Sept 7: The mother of juvenile offender Moha-mmad Ameen has appealed to the president to commute the death awarded to his son by an anti-terrorism court.
Mrs Walayat Khan has submitted a mercy petition to the president for commuting the sentence. Ameen, who belongs to the Swathi Gate area of Peshawar, was convicted by the court on Jan 31, 2000, in Rawalpindi.
The petitioner described the trial court’s observation on the age of her son as wrong and stated that at the time of judgement, Ameen was 16/17 and not 17/18. The doctor concerned in the medical report had recorded his age as 18 years on the basis of his appearance, she said.
Mrs Walayat informed that according to the school leaving and birth certificates, Muham-mad Ameen was 16 years and 8 months at the time of occurrence.
It was due to the negligence of the lawyer concerned that the age of her son was not recorded properly, she alleged.
The mother stated that she was a poor old women and her husband was also old and ill, and asked the president to help her in the name of Allah and convert the death sentence into life imprisonment.
The Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child has also requested the president to accept the mercy petition and commute the capital punishment to the life term.
The society, working for the promotion and protection of child rights in Pakistan, has asked Gen Pervez Musharraf to accept the appeal in line with the provision of the Juvenile Justice System Ordinance, 2000, and internationally agreed standards of juvenile justice and child rights.
