HYDERABAD, Sept 7: The Pakistan Oilseed Development Board has announced an action plan for cultivation of canola in Sindh during the Rabi season of 2003-2004.
The canola cultivation will start in the middle of September and end in the last week of October.
The Thatta district has been given a target of 3,500 acres, Hyderabad and Nawabshah 6,500 acres, Sukkur 4,000 acres and Larkana 6,000 acres.
Sindh PODB director Waris Shaikh has directed regional managers of the board to accelerate their efforts to ensure that the target set was achieved.
He said collaboration with the Sindh agriculture extension department would continue and the All Pakistan Solvent Extraction Association would be approached to offer contracts to farmers and announce a minimum purchase price of Rs700 per 40 kilograms for canola.
The regional managers have also been asked to submit weekly progress reports regarding contracts with growers, seed supply and the sown area.
PROGRESS REPORTS: The Sindh University Syndicate at its 133rd meeting held on Saturday approved annual progress reports of 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.
Vice-Chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui presided over the meeting. He informed the participants that 57 per cent more students were enrolled in various departments as compared to the previous academic session.
He said eight scholars of the university were sent abroad and 32 were conducting research within the country for PhD degrees.
Mr Siddiqui said the university had changed the academic session from September-June to January-December.
