Pakistan must win Asia Cup: Shahbaz

KARACHI, Sept 6: Pakistan needs a victory boost in forthcoming Asian Cup hockey to be played at Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) later this month for revival of sport in this country.

This was stated by former Pakistan captain and star forward Muhammad Shahbaz Senior. “It is important that Pakistan emerge victorious in Asia Cup”, he declared.

The winner of the Asia Cup will automatically earn a place in next year’s Athens Olympics.

“Without victory in major international event, Pakistan hockey cannot attract the attention of people”, he said.

“Had we reached the final of the Champions Trophy it would been a great morale booster for game. But a bad loss against India changed the things”, he maintained.

Faisalabad-born Shahbaz, a house hold name in international hockey said, tactical mistakes, complacency and poor defence cost Pakistan dearly.

He said when Indians were fighting back from 4-2 down, Pakistan defence as well as forward line failed to break their rhythm.

He admitted that penalty corner executioner Sohail Abbas will again be a key player for Pakistan. However, he said a good performance from forward line would be an added incentive.—APP
