MUMBAI, Sept 1: Indian police on Monday charged four Muslims, including a man and wife and their 17-year-old daughter, for the twin car bombings in Bombay a week ago which killed 52 people.

The four were charged under tough anti-terrorism laws which carry the death sentence.

Bombay police commissioner R.S. Sharma said the accused had links with the Lashkar-i-Taiba hardline Islamic militant outfit that is fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.

Mr Sharma told a media conference here they were also involved in the July 28 bombing of a bus. He denied earlier reports that the suspects had ties with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India.

The four are Sayyad Mohammad Haneef, his wife Sayyad Fahimida Mohammad Haneef, their daughter Sayyad Fareen Mohammad Haneef and Arshad Shafiq Mohammad Ansari.—AFP
