KARACHI: Khuhro terms Musharraf’s remarks ‘provocative’

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 27: Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro on Wednesday condemned Gen Musharraf’s remarks against validity of the assembly’s resolutions against the Greater Thal Canal project and claimed that by implication, the General had shown contempt for the Pakistan Resolution, adopted by this assembly.

He was addressing a news conference in his chambers after thesecond day’s proceedings of the assembly’s ongoing session on Wednesday.

Mr Khuhro was of the view that perhaps the General was not aware of the spirit of the 1973 Constitution and had not learnt lessons from history.

Flanked by Nasrullah Shaji, deputy parliamentary leader of the MMA, Mr Khuhro said that Gen Musharraf was heading towards a unitary presidential form of governance to satisfy his ego and arrogance. “We should not forget that the policy of parity between East and West Pakistan had destroyed the country.”

He was of the view that due to provocative statements, such as those allegedly made by Gen Musharraf, Pakistan and its people would suffer.

The opposition leader accused the regime of denying Sindh its legitimate share and questioned Gen Musharraf’s statement that any out of the way favour was being made to the province by the ‘big brother’.

He alleged that Gen Musharraf had himself said that 30,000 military personnel were allotted land in the area of the GTC project and said that such autocratic policy would create bickering among the provinces.

Mr Khuhro said that Gen Musharraf’s insistence on constructing the canal, despite strong opposition by the people of Sindh, was regrettable. Such a dictatorial attitude of an individual would not be liked by the people of Sindh, he added.

He accused the treasury benches of running away from discussing the issue after Gen Musharraf categorically showed his rejection of the Sindh Assembly’s unanimous resolutions.

Mr Khuhro told a questioner that survival of assemblies at the moment depended on the whims of an individual for whom provincial assemblies were of no consequence.
