Protest: case against 250 rickshaw drivers

By Our Correspondent

OKARA, Aug 13: Around 250 rickshaw owners/drivers and their union president were booked on the charge of blocking the GT Road here on Wednesday.

After falling out with TMA’s tax collecting officials over the imposition of heavy monthly taxes, the motorcycle rickshaw owners gathered at the Deepalpur Chowk and blocked the Grand Trunk Road. Hundreds of protester, led by Rickshaw Union president Ihsanul Haq, also raised slogans against the TMA for imposing heavy monthly taxes.

Receiving information about the traffic jam as to the result of blocking of the road, the B-Division SHO with a heavy police contingent rushed to the spot. After long hours of dialogue with the police, the protesting rickshaw owners/drivers dispersed peacefully.

However, police have registered a case under 16 MPO against some 250 rickshaw owners/drivers and the union president, who is also the MMA’s district information secretary.
