BADIN, Aug 4: Major problems are being faced in providing relief to the rain-affected people of Badin district, including the safe arrival of relief goods to their actual destination. One person was killed when a constable tried to control an unruly mob trying to get relief goods from a truck.

On Monday, a truck carrying relief goods was headed towards a relief camp, established by the Al-Rasheed Trust, in the coastal village of Mithan Jat.

An angry mob of villagers from Deh Walhari stopped the truck near the Sar Anjam bus stop and tried to get the relief goods. When a police constable, guarding the truck, offered resistance, he was reportedly beaten with lathis. To control the mob, he opened fire as a result of which a villager, Hassan Lashari, 35, was killed on the spot while another, Talib, 22, was injured.

Hassan’s body was taken to the Kadhan hospital, where the villagers observed sit-in and blocked the road against the police action.

CASE REGISTERED: The Badin police have registered a case against Constable Basheer Ahmed Lashari for killing a villager, Hassan Lashari.

Police also registered a counter case against Hassan Lashari, Talib Lashari and 30 other unknown villagers for interfering in official duties.

The district Nazim announced Rs100,000 while the DPO announced a donation of one day’s salary of each police servant of the district for the parents of Hassan Lashari.

The in charge of Al-Rasheed Trust, Abbas Leghari, also announced Rs50,000 for the parents of Hassan Lashari. He also announced to bear all medical expenses for Talib.

Major Siraj, who was supervizing relief operation, said that the relief work had been streamlined, and issuance of relief goods was made subject to the approval of the Taluka Nazim.

However, he said that complaints had been received from the villagers that the deserving were not receiving relief goods as the councillors and Nazims had not prepared any lists of the rain-affected people.

He, however, said that each union council Nazim had been strictly asked to prepare a list for distribution of relief goods among the rain-affected people.

On the other hand, Colonel Sarmad, while briefing newsmen, said that four helicopters were engaged in dropping rations among the rain-affected people who were stranded and also to those who had taken shelter at safer places.

He said that a total of 22 people were rescued with the help of helicopters.

Later, MPA Syed Ali Bux Shah alias Papoo Shah and District Nazim Kamal Khan Chang claimed that the rains were not the actual cause of disaster but the LBOD was the main cause of the calamity.

They said that still thousands of people remained stranded.

They said that it would take time for the floods to recede.

TEN VILLAGES FLOODED: The main drain of the Guni Phulelli Outfall Drain (the Ali Mir Shah Sim Nala) developed a 200-ft-wide breach at RD-86, 87 at its east bank in the wee hours of Tuesday as a result of which 10 villages were flooded, including Haji Mir Otho, Yousuf Udhejo, Ali Mohammad Udhejo, and Usman Otho.

The water is moving fast towards the Mataro Mandhro village.

At least 2,500 acres were submerged under water and crops destroyed.
