MULTAN, July 12: The local office of the Environment Protection Department has recommended cancellation of licences of two power plants working in the Khanewal district for not doing the required afforestation.

Sources in the EPD told Dawn that Rouch Power Plant in Abdul Hakeem and Fauji Power Plant in Kabirwala had been issued licences to work under the condition that they would do afforestation at the rate of 10 acres per Mega Watt of their power generation capacity.

But, the sources said, both the power plants did nothing in this respect. At this, DO (environment) Mian Khalid Mehmood, who is also the acting DO (environment) of Khanewal and Muzaffargarh districts, had sent cases against both the power plants to the provincial authorities for action against them under Environment Protection Act, 1997.
