KARACHI, July 8: The city Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, on Tuesday directed the DIG (Traffic) to inquire into the causes of traffic jams which occurred at various roads and traffic intersections on Monday.
Expressing annoyance over unprecedented heavy traffic mess which the Karachiites faced on Monday, the Nazim asked the DIG (Traffic) to submit him a report, citing causes of traffic jams.
A spokesman for the city government said that the Nazim inquired from the DIG (Traffic) as to where the traffic police had disappeared on Monday, the latter replied that the police were present on roads and he himself had visited the city.
The City Nazim, who reached the city after cutting short his visit to Islamabad on Tuesday, visited various towns to see the impact of Monday’s rains.
On seeing that rainwater was still stagnant on different roads of Saddar, including Empress Market, he asked the Saddar Town’s Nazim, Farooq Faria, to ensure that rainwater is removed at the earliest.
During his visit to Maimarabad Union Council, he directed the concerned officials to make arrangements for constructing two small bridges at UC’s Shod Nadi where one person lost his life owing to flooding of the Nadi on Monday.
He also visited Gulistan-i-Jauhar to express his condolences with the family members of those eight people who were killed in a landslide.
The Nazim lauded the efforts of SHO Shaoor Khan and other policemen for rescuing 14 people in Surjani Nullah.
The Nazim, who was accompanied by city government’s EDO (Works), Brig Zaheer Quadri and senior officials of water and sanitation department, visited different towns, including Nazimabad, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Gadap, North Nazimabad, Liaquatabad and directed the officials to ensure removal of rainwater from all roads and streets without any further delay.
