Afghanistan flayed by AI over prisoners

KABUL, July 8: Amnesty International said on Tuesday that prisoners in Afghanistan are being mistreated, tortured and sexually abused.

“All around the country, men and women suffer in detention, deprived not only of their liberty but stripped also of their dignity,” Amnesty Secretary General Irene Khan told reporters in Kabul.

In a report focusing on the criminal justice system in Afghanistan, Amnesty said prisoners are being held for months in overcrowded cells, some of them shackled, with inadequate food and bedding, and poor sanitation.—dpa
