Ahmed IV lift title
KARACHI, July 7: The dark horses of the tournament Ahmed IV put up very impressive performance to annex the title of Yousuf Dada Bridge Championship at Aslam Bridge Hall on Sunday. Nineteen teams participated in the contest which included celebrated teams like Allana, Candyland, Giants and Lipton.
Ahmed IV’s victory by any standard could not be termed as fluke, but it was the biggest surprise of the year. They put up much impressive game after each round of their success.
Starting with their overnight score of their 74 V.P winning three out of four matches Ahmed IV outpaced EFU with their remarkable game approach of the tricky computerised boards and giving them excellent technical treatment.
They added 23-7 to their score. In the sixth round match Ahmed IV then pitched up against Chandana and returned with an overwhelming victory 25-0.
In the last round they faced another strong contenders, Lipton and outplayed them in every department of the game registering 20-10, thus raising their score of 142 victory points. The team comprised S.A Hameed, Comdr. Masud, Tariq Zafar, Shahab, Ashraf and Farhat Abbas.
Candyland maintained their form throughout the tournament, Having started fifth round with their overnight score of 84 v.p they palyed winning draw against Chandana and again a draw against Liptons, however, made allout effort in the last round to pile up maximum 25-4 defeating Giants.
The team fielded their regular pairs of Zia-Hamid, Khalid-Hasan Askari, Muhammed Ismail and Imran Jake. Makeshift which was trying hard to survive in the mainstream in the earlier rounds, improvised their performance after the fifth round when they outplayed Young and Old 21-9 in the fifth, 19-11 against EFU in the sixth and finally a convincing victory 24-6 against Shahab to occupy third position with the total score of 125 v.p . A.K Bhurgari, Mustafa Saif, Afzal Saikh, Jamal Nazim, and Azher were the components of Makeshift.
The national team Allana, Sultan Siddiqui, Rashid Jaffer, Sarfraz Khan and Tehseen Gheewala minus Jane Alam Allana after the record defeat from Candyland 3-25 won next three matches from Raza 18-12, winning draw against Shahab 15-15 and Young &Old 18-12 could raise their score to 118 to claim fourth position. Lipton and Candyland both scored 114 V.P but however on technical reasons Lipton was awarded the prize for the fifth position.—PPI
