PESHAWAR, July 6: NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has urged the international community to participate in the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

He was speaking at a function arranged by the Saudi Relief Committee for Afghanistan at a local hotel here on Saturday.

Mr Durrani said that the Afghan people continued to live in miserable conditions as almost quarter of a century of internal strife had left the basic infrastructure, including roads and services sector, in a shamble.

Stressing the need for the international community, specially the Muslim Ummah, he said that they should contribute a reasonable share of their resources towards the rehabilitation of the Afghans, and reconstruction of their country, he added.

The chief minister said: "We must have to provide that help to boost the morale of the people."

Mr Durrani said the people of Afghanistan were supported morally, politically and financially by many nations and organizations wherein the Saudi Relief Committee stood conspicuously.

The chief minister also enumerated the sacrifices of the people of NWFP and added that the people of Frontier had shared everything with their Afghan brethren during their struggle against the Soviet invasion.

Director of the Saudi Relief Committee Fahad Hamdul Mubarak also spoke.
