KARACHI: Muttahida appeals for harmony

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 6: The coordination committee of Muttahida Qaumi Movement has appealed for sectarian harmony and cautioned people against conspiracies aimed at sparking off sectarian riots.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the committee said that the recent attack an Imambargah in Quetta which resulted in deaths of dozens of people and injuries to scores of others was a plot to provoke peaceful citizens. The aim, it said was to shatter Muslims’ unity through sectarian riots.

“Those involved in politics and terrorism in the cover of religion are once again out to hatch conspiracies to spark off sectarian riots and the act of terrorism in Quetta is the part of the same conspiracy,” the committee observed.

The committee appealed to the Shia and Sunni ulema to preach sectarian harmony, religious tolerance and fraternity, and keep a vigilant eye on those indulging in provoking others.

MMA: The President of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, Sindh chapter, Asadullah Bhutto (MNA) has said that the carnage in Quetta proves failure of the federal government.

“A number of sensitive agencies are at the disposal of the central government and occurrence of such a big tragedy in their presence is the evidence of the government’s failure,” he contended while speaking at a meeting of the executive committee of Jamaat-i-Islami, Sindh at Quba Auditorium on Sunday.

He said that the MMA always promoted religious tolerance and affection. However, he added, conspirators were playing a sinister game.

Mr Bhutto, who is also provincial chief of the JI, said that the ruling clique in Punjab, instead of dispelling apprehensions of Sindh people over Thal canal project, was increasing them further.

Stressing that Camp David agenda must be blocked, he said the JI had decided to play its due role in the MMA’s protest movement and in mobilizing masses on the moves detrimental to the national interests. The moves, he added, included recognizing Israel and dispatch of Pakistani troops to Iraq.

The MMA’s parliamentary party leader in the Sindh Assembly, Maulana Omar Sadiq, and deputy leader Nasrullah Khan Shaji demanded a judicial inquiry into the violence in Karachi during which several buses were set on fire in Liaquatabad area.
