Victories for Pindi and Lahore

LAHORE, July 3: Lahore and Rawalpindi won their opening matches in the PCB-Pepsi-Imran Under-16 inter-regional cricket tournament at the LCCA Ground on Thursday.

Lahore defeated Peshawar by six wickets at the LCCA Ground where the match was restricted to 25-over-a-side due to rain the previous day. Set to score 92 to win, Lahore reached the target with four overs to spare. Opener Ahmed Butt (32, three fours) and Umar Akmal (28, two fours) were the key scorers for the winners.

Earlier, Imtiaz Afridi scored 36 to help Peshawar get a total of 91 for nine in 25 overs. He hit three boundaries.

Medium-pacer Muhammad Shahzad and off-spinner Usman Malik earned three wickets each for 20 and 16 runs, respectively.

Four wickets by leg-spinner Yasim Murtaza helped Rawalpindi earn a 47-run win against Mianwali at the Gaddafi Stadium where the match started at 11am.

Batting first, Rawalpindi piled up a total of 200 for eight in 40 overs. Waqas Waheed (36, four fours), Asif Mukhtar (29, four fours), Javed Riaz (28) and Samiullah (28 not out, one four) were the key scorers.

Fast bowler Muhammad Kashif bowled well for Mianwali, picking up four for 41 while Amjad Khan, another pacer, finished with two for 46.

In reply, Mianwali slumped at a meagre total of 153 in 36.4 overs. Besides Yasim, off-spinner Asif Mukhtar and leg-spinner Samiullah  snared two wickets each for 31 and  33  runs, respectively.

Only Asad Raza (26, one four), Riffatullah (23, one four) and Ata-ur-Rehman (21) could resist the terrific spin bowling attack of the opponent to some extent.

Summarised scores:

Lahore beat Peshawar by six wickets.

PESHAWAR: 91 for nine in 25 overs (Imtiaz Afridi 36, Naved Khan 14 not out; M Shahzad 3-20, Usman Malik 3-16).

LAHORE: 92 for four in 21 overs (Ahmed Butt 32, Umar Akmal 28).

Rawalpindi beat Mianwali by 47 runs.

RAWALPINDI: 200 for eight in 40 overs (Waqas Waheed 36, Asif Mukhtar 29, Hamid Riaz 28, Samiullah 28 not out, Mubashar Javed 23; Muhammad Kashif 4-41, Amjad Khan 2-46).

MIANWALI: 153 for all in 36.4 overs (Asad Raza 26, Riffatullah 23, Ataur Rehman 21; Yasim Murtaza 4-24, Asif Mukhtar 2-31, Samiullah 2-33).
