Contingency plan for Leh flood prepared

By Baqir Sajjad Syed

RAWALPINDI, July 3: Nullah Leh may overflow again during the monsoon, likely to start from Friday. The apprehension was expressed at a meeting, held to review the flood control situation in the city on Thursday, sources disclosed.

The sources said the assumption was mainly based on the rise in Leh water level up to the danger mark of 16 feet during the recent 45mm rains.

The officials, who look after the flood control arrangements in the city, feared that rains above 45mm might submerge the surrounding low-lying areas.

The officials said flooding in Nullah Leh was being feared over the next few days.

Meanwhile, the administration has prepared a contingency plan to control any untoward situation during the monsoon.

Flood warning sirens have been installed in the low-lying areas, including Pirwadhai, Ratta Amral, Viqarun Nisa College, TMA offices and Cantonment Fire Brigade so that people could be informed timely about the floods. The emergency sirens would be supported by announcements by the mobile units.

The authorities have planned to establish three relief camps in case of flooding. The proposed sites are Islamia High School No: 4, M.C. High School Babu Lal Hussain Road and Ratta Amral School.

The city has been divided into four sectors in connection with relief activities and three teaching hospitals have been asked to allocate 20 beds each to meet any eventuality.

Central flood control room has also been set up, which will update the information about the floods and rains and will coordinate with the agencies concerned. Installation of a new water gauge at Gawalmandi bridge has been ordered.

OUR STAFF REPORTER FROM ISLAMABAD ADDS: Deputy Commissioner Tariq Mahmood Khan has finalized the flood control plan to protect people in the low-lying areas of the capital from flood devastation.

Presiding over a meeting on Thursday, the deputy commissioner said areas like Sihala, Soan, Tarlai, Khana Dak, Sihala Darzian, Humak, Sihala Khor and Hardo Gher could be affected in the coming monsoon season.

All departments concerned have been re-activated for constant vigilance to combat any flood emergency in the rainy season, particularly along the banks of Soan and Korang rivers.

He informed the meeting that necessary directives had also been issued to all concerned to provide relief to the affected people in case of any possible flood situation.

Meanwhile, the District Flood Relief Committee, headed by the deputy commissioner, has been constituted and a District Flood Control Centre established in the office of the additional deputy commissioner (general) which will work round the clock. The centre can be contacted on telephone nos 9200044 and 9261504.
