Breach floods crops

TOBA TEK SINGH, June 23: Hundreds of acres of crops were inundated on Monday due to a breach that occurred in Jhang Branch Canal near Chak 303-JB.

Initially, the breach was 20 feet in the morning, but it was expanded to 40 feet at the time of filing this report in the evening. Five kutcha houses were also collapsed because of the breach. The staff of the Irrigation department was busy in plugging the breach after the closure of the canal.

Irrigation Employees Power Union leader Allah Bakhsh Sial complained that the breach was created by the influential farmers who were in fact stealing the canal water.

He claimed that the dug out earth on the spot was the proof of his charge. He blamed that the police did not take action against the influential farmers due to which frequent incidents of breaches occurred in the area.

Meanwhile, representatives of cultivators accused the Irrigation department staff for the breach saying that the staff did not look after the canal banks properly.

PROTEST: Students of the Government Vocational Training Institute on Monday protested against the men of transporters for torturing their colleagues.

The protesting students blocked the traffic on Toba-Chichawatni Road for half an hour. The students also overpowered a bus driver and thrashed him severely as a result of which he fell unconscious. He was admitted to a local hospital.

Later, the protesting students dispersed when police officials assured them that a legal action would be taken against transporters if they were found guilty of charges.

BAITHAK: An NGO will construct a Kissan Baithak in a nearby Chak 325-JB, Dullam.

The foundation stone of the building was laid on Monday by office bearers of the NGO at a function which was also attended by representatives of farmers from districts of Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Bhakkar, Khushab and Sargodha.

Speaking to the gathering, NGO office bearers claimed that the Kissan Baithuk would help farmers in resolving their problems.

CASE: City police on Monday registered a case against the sales officer of a fertilizer company for storing hundreds of adulterated fertilizer bags in the company warehouse.

Police recovered 346 fertilizer bags and arrested warehouse incharge Rana Muhammad Rauf. Later, police also arrested sales officer Irfan Ahmad.

RECOVERED: On the orders of the district and sessions judge, a bailiff on Monday raided the Nawan Lahore police station and recovered a man who was kept there illegally.

Relatives of Muhammad Hayat had filed a petition before court in which it was alleged that police had arrested Hayat without registering any case against him.
