KARACHI June 16: The city council on Monday expressed concern over the consistent short and interrupted supply of water and electricity.

The House unanimously termed these inefficient services of basic public utilities a deliberate attempt to jeopardise the future of the newly-established local bodies system.

The House reiterated that these anomalies were aimed at creating a misperception among the people about the city government.

They said the provincial government, in connivance with the federal government, was hatching a conspiracy against the city government by affecting the performance of these public utilities. They also denounced the harsh attitude of police towards the Nazims.

Besides the House also approved a record number of 24 resolutions in a single day.

A resolution, condemning attack on Orangi Town UC Nazim Raees Kazmi, was also adopted.

Mohammad Ashraf, UC Nazim of Baldia Town, said his area had long been experiencing an acute water shortage which might a create law and order situation.

He alleged that the shortage was the artificial one, created at the behest of some officials to tarnish the image of the CDGK.

Shakeel, a UC Nazim of Orangi Town, criticized the attack on the office of an Nazim Raees Kazmi, and said the police were providing cover to culprits.

Nadeem Mufti of Lyari Town raised the water shortage issue in his area and said despite meetings with the higher officials and their repeated promises, no relief had yet been in sight.

He cautioned that the residents of the area had lost patience and had started staging protest demonstrations, and if their plea remained unattended, their increasing protests might culminate into some serious situation.

Nazims from Lyari Town raised the issue of water shortage and added that the provincial government had unleased a reign of terror and intimidation on the city council Nazims.

Another UC Nazim Imran Baghpati brought to the notice of the House the dismal performance of the KESC and criticized its scheme of fixing electricity metres outside the premises.

He held the KESC, the PTCL and other organizations responsible for depleted roads and said when a new road was constructed in any area, these agencies undertake road-cutting on one or the other pretext.
