Pakistan is a good ally: US

By Masood Haider

NEW YORK, June 14: A State Department spokesman said on Friday that the United States continued to receive “good cooperation” from Pakistan on its global ‘war against terrorism’.

Briefing newsmen at the Foreign Press center in New York, deputy spokesman Phillip Reeker said, “of course, more can always be done to combat terrorism” by all international players.

He said that Pakistani government continued to apprehend terrorists, shared intelligence data with US agencies and in stemming financing of terrorist cells.

However, he noted that tensions between India and Pakistan had reduced significantly since last year when the two countries faced each other.

Asked to comment on President Pervez Musharraf’s impending visit to the United States, Reeker said President Bush would discuss a variety of issues dealing with “multilateral and bilateral issues”.

When questioned about the situation in Afghanistan, he declined to make any substantial comments, saying: “I am not really up on the situation there.” He lamented that Afghanistan has gone off from the radar of the international press.
