LAHORE, June 7: Two great three-year-old fillies, English-bred, Laser Lass and the other Pakistan-bred Fair Play, are to measure their strides again when they clash for supremacy in the Tarbela Textile Mill Cup to be contested over 1200m at the Lahore Racecourse on Sunday.
Of a dozen acceptors for this feature event, a class I, II and III combined handicap race both have been outstanding performers among three-year-old females during the on-going season.
Both have captured the attention of racing public following their first clash on May 25 last when they dead-heated to share the spoils in the Ravi Plate for class I, II and III run over 1200m. They take on to their undecided battle for a thrilling supremacy Sunday. The handicap remains the same and the distance of race too is the same, 1200m.
On May 25 when the race ended in a dead-heat, it came as a bitter surprise for the connections of Laser Lass, who had been hoping an easy success. Later it transpired that Laser Lass’s bridle had slipped out of her mouth which impaired her running.
Her trainer Haji Ghulam Sarwar, who is well-known in racing circles was fined rupees 1000 for not tightening the buckle of the bridle of his charge. Keeping this aspect of the race in view Laser Lass should win the race.
But one thing goes totally against her is that the hot weather does not suit her conditions and environment as she was brought up and trained in England. This gives advantage to her opponent.
The surface statistics probably favour the prolific Laser Lass, a progeny of Ali Royal (IRE) out-of-Lingdale Lass (GB), with four back-to-back wins in five outings to date.
Fair Play, too has to her credit four wins in her ten outings, of which she was placed six times.
She is from Re-Play out-of-Lust For Love. When her owner Sohrab Khan, who maintains a big yard, had purchased Fair Play, he was hoping for a roaring success for the filly but so far she had not lived up to his high expectations because of the fresh induction of imported blue- blood fillies.
Miracle, Royal Falcon and Feel The freedom may fight for less remunerative positions in this seventh race of the day.
A competitive card of eight races one over 1200 metres, five over 1000m and two over 800m will be decided in the afternoon. The first race will start at 2.30pm.
Meanwhile, The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards have warned horse-owners that if they do not try all their charges running in races they would be forced to further reduce stake- money offered to horses placed first, second and third.
A notification issued by the LRC said that they have already made some reduction in the prize-money because majority of owners are not trying their horses. With the result there was hardly any competition worth the name in races during the on-going season.
