ISLAMABAD, June 5: A plan has been presented to the federal government for holding local government elections in the capital territory.

This was stated by Chairman National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) Daniyal Aziz while briefing newsmen here on Wednesday.

Mr Aziz said the district government system had shown excellent performance vis a vis financial discipline and monitoring of the fund utilisation at gross roots level during the last one year.

He said successful steps had been taken to ensure transparency and check corruption in the new local government system through a comprehensive audit system.

He said the local governments enjoyed full authority to plan and spend the funds according to their local priorities for rapid development and solution of the local problems.

He said combined accounting, auditing, local level monitoring and community participation would ensure judicious and efficient use of these resources besides improving the delivery services of the local governments.—PPI
