HYDERABAD: Protest against water shortage

By Our Correspondent

HYDERABAD, June 3: The residents of Pathan Colony blocked a portion of the National Highway on Tuesday to protest against the non-availability of water to their areas for the last four days.

The residents blocked the road by raising barricades, suspending normal flow of traffic for several hours.

The protesters claimed that for the last four days the supply of water had been suspended to Gharibabad, Hazara, Baldia, Pathan, Kumar Para, Millat Islamiya, Sarfaraz and Doctor colonies.

They said that a water pipeline of Wasa had ruptured in Hazara Colony as a result of which the house of a retired army personnel was being damaged. They said that subsequently Wasa officials suspended the water supply, which has not been restored as yet.

The protesters held a demonstration in the area on late Monday night.

During the protest, a constable, Akbar, manhandled a woman, Haseena, who was among the protesters.

The Taluka City Council Nazim, Haji Moeenuddin Sheikh, ensured the water supply through fire tenders on Monday night but it was not restored with the result that the residents again took to the streets.

The protesters said that around 25,000 people are living in these areas who have to suffer the numerous power breakdowns in the scorching heat and now the water supply cut which was making summer unbearable.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement MNA Shamim Akhtar also arrived in the area and condemned the manhandling of Haseena by a constable.

Later, the constable was suspended by the ASP, Phulelli, Dr Inam.

STUDENTS: Two students of the University of Sindh were beaten up by over a dozen other students in the international hostel of the university the other day.

At least 16 students barged into room-16 of the hostel and thrashed MBA final year students Mohammad Bux and Anil Kumar.

The Jamshoro police have registered a case against Sharaf Rajpar, Faqir Mohammad Nawaz Panhyar, Hassan Pathan, Qurban Mangi and twelve others.
