Aegean Daisy bags feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, June 1: Odds-on favourite, imported English filly Aegean Daisy lived upto expectations of her connections when she triumphed in the feature and last event of the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Ridden by jockey Salah-ud-Din II, the chestnut filly overtook the leaders in the final stretch of the 1200m race to win by one-and-a-half lengths from Kargil Tiger, who nosed out Zargar by a neck to third position. Flame completed the frame among nine runners.

This was Aegean Daisy’s second successive victory of her racing career spanning over hardly a couple of months.

A race earlier chestnut filly Rukhtas Again ran ahead of the field to win the supporting and fifth event run over 1200 metres. She beat Royal Prosper by five-and-a-half lengths.

Fancied Burn Heart did not run to the expectations of her backers and finished third, five-and-a-half lengths further behind. Set A Fire completed the board over four lengths further away.

Yet another favourite Love Moon outpaced his 13 rivals to bag the fourth race of the day. He beat Beena Roy Baby by about three lengths. Royal Harban and Speed Gun completed the frame.

Riding boy A. Aziz gave an excellent display of horsemanship by bringing in a brace of winners.

He sailed in Honest Bird in the opener and Love Moon in the fourth race.

Well-backed and form horses came to the fore in five of the six events card decided in the afternoon. The bay mare Hataf Sara was the only long shot to win on Sunday.

Meanwhile the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards have decided to cancel the Lahore Gymkhana races scheduled to be held on Wednesday. They have further decided to hold races one a week on Sundays only. The decision has been taken in view of the scorching summer heat which has gripped the provincial metropolis of Punjab currently.
