PESHAWAR, May 5: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government has started undoing decisions taken by the last military-backed civil government in the province.
Well-placed official sources said that some of the decisions made to close down of ineffective public sector entities in order to bring down non-developmental expenditure were likely to be reversed.
“Many of ministers think that decisions taken in their sectors by the last government are wrong as they have affected the provincial government’s efficiency,” said a senior official.
The MMA government has already started spadework to do away with the Institution-Based Practice by public sector doctors.
Though a notification has yet to be issued to abolish the IBP, practically it has become ineffective as public sector doctors have already restarted practice in their clinics.
The IBP had been introduced by the last military government as part of its reforms programme in the health sector. The NWFP Assembly has unanimously adopted the report of a special committee recommending the abolition of the IBP.
Official sources though Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah wanted the IBP to continue, the MMA government was all set to do away with it.
Similarly, the MMA government has initiated process to restore the engineering cell in the agriculture department. The cell had been wound up by the previous government to bring down non- developmental expenditure.
The abolition of the cell, two-and-a-half years back, had been effected on the basis of the then provincial government’s findings that cell’s machinery was being misused by the influential and former ministers.
“Hundreds of millions of rupees are payable by former ministers and influential persons who used official tractors and bulldozers without paying rental charges,” said the official.
“The process to restoring the engineering cell has already been initiated and the cell is likely to be set in place soon,” said official sources.
Besides, said senior officials, an MMA MPA had launched efforts to get restored the Government Transport Service, abolished in mid-1990s.
Also, Chief Minister Akram Durrani has cancelled a Rs67 million contract approved by the last military government for the construction of an intersection on Jail Road, Peshawar.
Moreover, a firm that had been awarded contract for the construction of a fly-over near Suri Bridge, involving millions, has been asked to revise the design of the fly-over, suspending execution of the project for an indefinite period.
Similarly, the government has made changes in the share of funds allocated to certain districts for the execution of water- related projects. Sources say that large amount of funds allocated to Kohat have been shifted to certain other areas.
They said the government might also reconsider the liquidation of the Frontier Co-operative Bank.
The MMA government has also abandoned the construction of an open air theatre.
