RAWALPINDI, April 29: A Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) student shot dead a fellow girl student and then tried to commit suicide at the university premises on Tuesday, police and hospital authorities said.

Amina Gillani, 28, a student of Master of Business Administration, was shot dead by Ali Rizwan Kasuri near the Admin block around 4:15pm, the police said.

Ali Rizwan, a 5th semester student of commerce, then shot himself with the same pistol, and sustained a critical head injury.

The additional superintendent of police, Khalid Khattak, told Dawn that a pistol, believed to be the same weapon used by the boy, had been found at the crime scene. Besides, the deceased’s purse, an umbrella and a magazine were also found near her body.

Apparently, there was a ‘love affair’ between the two young students which ended in a tragic way, the SP said.

The police, while quoting the victim’s friends, said Amina and Ali were last seen roaming near the admin block. However, they did not know about the cause of the incident.

“They were looking happy when last seen near a fountain,” a student, who refused to be named, said.

On hearing the gunshot, some students rushed to the scene and found the couple lying in a pool of blood. The police said the boy was carrying a pistol in his hand. They were removed to the Federal Government Services Hospital, where Amina was pronounced dead, while Ali was shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in critical condition.

“Ali Rizwan, who sustained critical head injury, has been in coma since the incident happened. He had not recorded any statement so far,” the investigation officer said.

Ali Rizwan Kasuri belonged to Lahore, while Amina Gilani, daughter of a retired army officer, was a resident of Harley Street, Rawalpindi.

The police investigation suggested that the girl had recently been engaged with some other boy by her parents, which drove Rizwan into distress.

The victim was one of the brilliant students and a popular figure of the university, the investigation officer said.

He said the university administration had not been cooperating with the police in providing required particulars of the two students.

The victim’s body will be handed over to her parents after autopsy, the police said.
