MULTAN, April 28: The city tehsil council on Monday postponed its meeting because of the absence of official heads of various wings of the city tehsil administration.
Dr Muzaffar Ahsan Qureshi chaired the meeting in which none of the tehsil officers turned up to represent his respective branch. Tehsil Municipal Officer Ashiq Chaudhry was also conspicuous by his absence.
After initial formalities, a member of the council pointed out that the proceedings of the meeting would remain fruitless in the absence of the TOs, who were responsible to execute decisions of the council. “Perhaps, the officials do not give importance to the elected house,” he remarked.
At this point, the convener gave time to the officials to join the meeting. However, when the officials did not turn up even after the deadline, the convener adjourned the meeting without announcing the next date.
Talking to newsmen later, the convener said the TMA would issue a show-cause notice to all the TOs, who would explain why couldn’t they attend the meeting. He said the matter of their ‘indifference’ would be brought to the knowledge of the local bodies’ department, if the TOs did not cooperate in future.
Mr Qureshi said the council’s meeting was a serious matter and people from far-off areas had come to attend it, but the officials concerned had made a mockery of it.
Meanwhile, students of Muhammad Bin Qasim Blind Welfare School demonstrated outside the TMA offices against delay in release of Rs50,000 announced by tehsil Nazim Mian Faisal Mukhtar for their school. The protesters had held placards inscribed with their demand.
Later, Dr Muzaffar Qureshi met the protesting students and assured them that the grant would be released very soon.
