Shahbana declared best athlete

PESHAWAR, April 26: Pakistan’s International Athlete was declared best athlete of 2003 after securing 36 individual points in the Inter-College (Degree) Women athletic meet held at University campus here on Saturday.

A national record holder in 100m hurdles, Shabana, amassed 36 points among 100 athletes from more then 16 colleges of the province participated in the two-day athlete meet.

A computer student of Post Graduate Department of the Peshawar University, Shahbana, was closely followed by another upcoming athletes — Sadaf of Government Girls College, Haripur, Sadia Khalil of Jinnah College for Women University of Peshawar and Munawar Bashir of Frontier College for Women, Peshawar City.

Shahbana who represented the country in the last Commonwealth Games held in Manchester (England), secured first position in 100m, 200m, 400m, shot put, high jump, long jump and discus throw.

Sadaf of GGC, Haripur, got second positions in 100m, her teammate Tahira got runners-up silver medal in 200m, 400m, while Sadaf remained runners in long jump, and got third position in high jump.

Sadia Khalid, a best athlete of the University games held in 2002, got runners-up trophies in shot-put, javelin throw and discus throw.

Munawar Bashir of Frontier College for Women recorded a best throw in javelin as she crossed a distance of 100 and six feet, followed by Sadia Khalid with her distance of 99-2 feet and Shahbana Khattak with 98-5 feet.

In the most thrilling event of the days proceedings, 4X100 relay the team of GGC, Haripur (Abbottabad) comprising Tahira, Siddiqa, Momina, Sadaf, got first position, followed by PG’s Amalia, Falak Naz, Mussarat and Shahbana Khattak while GGC, Abbottabad No.1 team consisting of Saeeda, Sumera, Itfa and Tahira ended up in third position.—APP
