West Indies recall Gayle to face Australians in third Test

ST JOHN’S (Antigua), April 26: The West Indies selectors on Friday named a 14-man squad for the third Test against Australia starting at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados from Thursday.

Opener Chris Gayle is recalled to the squad after being overlooked for the first two matches while Wavell Hinds and David Bernard drop out.

The West Indies trail 2-0 in the four-match series having lost the first Test in Georgetown by nine wickets and the second in Port-of-Spain by 118 runs.

“My approach in the remaining matches will be very positive,” said Windies skipper Brian Lara.

“I am very optimistic about our batting in the remaining matches but in the bowling we need to do some work to limit the Australians.

“In the next Test, we will have more options and we should not get too carried away. We are playing against the best team in the world and trying too much could be a problem.

“One of things we do not want is to lose the next Test match; if we can get a draw it would be great, so we need to be careful who we select in the next match.”

Squad (age and Tests in parenthesis):

Brian Lara (captain 33/92), Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain 22/30), Omari Banks (20/0), Carlton Baugh (20/1), Tino Best (21/0), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (28/64), Mervyn Dillon (28/32), Vasbert Drakes (33/4), Daren Ganga (24/19), Chris Gayle (23/28), Ridley Jacobs (35/48), Jermaine Lawson (21/5), Marlon Samuels (22/17), Devon Smith (21/2).—AFP
