Kuehne shoots record 64 to share Houston lead

HUMBLE (Texas), April 26: Hank Kuehne shot a course record eight-under-par 64 in near darkness to join Mark Calcavecchia and Fred Couples in a share of the second-round lead at the Houston Open on Friday.

The three leaders were on 11-under 133, one shot clear of 49-year-old Jay Haas. Couples shot a four-under 68 in his second round, while Calcavecchia recorded a bogey-free, seven-under 65.

Paul Stankowski, with a six-under 66, moved into tie for fifth place on nine-under 135, along with world number six Vijay Singh.

David Toms, the world number seven, and Australia’s Stuart Appleby headed a list of five players tied for seventh on eight-under.

World number two Ernie Els shot his second straight 69 and was tied for 19th on 138, a stroke ahead of world number four Phil Mickelson.

The 27-year-old said he definitely did not want to have to finish his round on Saturday morning.

Kuehne is not even a member of the PGA Tour this season. He tied for 128th in the PGA Tour’s Qualifying School last December, but does have playing status on the Nationwide Tour.

He can become a Special Temporary Member on the PGA Tour by winning at least $139,157 this week.

In three PGA tournaments this season, Kuehne has missed one cut, tied for 74th and tied for third in his most recent event, the BellSouth Classic.

Kuehne began his round on the 10th hole, which he promptly birdied. He also birdied four more holes in his outward nine, then birdied numbers one, four and nine coming home.

He has made the cut in all five events since the surgery, but his best finish has been a tie for 11th in the Players Championship.

This could be the week, Calcavecchia said, that he wins his first tournament since 2001.

GARCIA IN CONTENTION

TENERIFE (Canary Islands): Defending champion Sergio Garcia surged into contention with a blemish-free 66 in the Canaries Spanish Open third round on Saturday, happy his recent swing remodelling was taking effect.

The 23-year-old Spaniard finished on 14-under-par 202 at Golf Costa Adeje, delighted to have improved his scoring round by round after an indifferent opening 69 had left him six strokes off the pace on day one.—Reuters
