LAHORE, April 26: An assistant professor of an autonomous government hospital removed the eye lens of a journalist who had gone to him for laser treatment of glaucoma.

The procedure was carried out at the Mumtaz Bukhtawar Hospital by Dr Abdul Hameed Khan who works for the Services Hospital.

Muhammad Asghar, a journalist working with Dawn, said Dr Khan did not even bother to inform him at the end of the procedure that he had removed his eye lens instead of treating glaucoma.

Mr Asghar said he had come to know about the doctor’s mistake when he consulted another doctor because he was worried about the loss of vision even after the completion of the laser treatment procedure.

“Normally such treatment lasts about 15 minutes or so, but in my case the doctor took about one hour before leaving the hospital without seeing other patients waiting there for him.

“The second consultant told me that Dr Khan had damaged my eye lens and tried to conceal his ineptness by removing it,” Mr Asghar said.

He said the contract signed before the commencement of the procedure did not call for the removal of the lens.
