PESHAWAR, April 25: The two alliances of lawyers belonging to political groups will face each other in the annual elections of Peshawar High Court Bar Association on Saturday.

A one-on-one contest is expected on all five key posts. Five candidates for the executive council have been declared elected unopposed.

The alliance of groups belonging to the Awami National Party, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and the PML-Q have been facing the PML-N, the PPP and the National Awami Party Pakistan.

A former ANP senator and staunch opponent of the Legal Framework Order, Qazi Muhammad Anwer has been facing independent candidate Safirullah Khan. Both of them are former presidents of the association. Although Safirullah claims to be an independent candidate, but the PPP, PML(N) and NAPP alliance has announced support for him.

Abdullah Sani of the PML-N and Shahabuddin Burq of PML-Q are contesting for the post of vice-president. For the post of general secretary, Ghulam Nabi of the MMA and Muzamil Khan of the PPP are contesting. Altaf Ahmad of the MMA will face Asad Kamal of the PPP for the post of joint secretary, whereas, Muhammad Habib Qureshi and Muhammad Ali Shah of the PML-Q and the PML-N respectively are vying for the treasurer’s post.

Hamid Shahzad and Liaquat Ali of the tripartite alliance of the ANP, MMA and PML-Q are declared elected unopposed as member executive council from Peshawar. S. M. Ilyas, Saeed Shah Bukhari and Akhter Munir are elected as members of the executive council from Mardan, Kohat and Malakand respectively.
