ISLAMABAD, April 23: The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned hearing of the APNS’s constitutional petition, challenging the 7th Wage Board Award, and fixed May 7 as the next date of hearing.
The case which was fixed at number six in the cause-list could not be taken up, as the other cases consumed the whole day.
At the fag-end of the proceedings, Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, counsel for the APNS, asked the court to fix some date in May. The court after consulting all the counsel, fixed May 7 as the next date of hearing.
Mr Pirzada lighted up a controversy when he pointed out that there was an application on the record of the court, raising the question “who would represent whom”, referring to an application filed by president of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists that senior advocate Abid Hasan Minto was their counsel and not advocate Akram Shaikh.
Abdul Hameed Chappra, chairman of All Pakistan Newspaper Employees Confederation, informed the court that Abid Hasan Minto was the counsel for respondent No 4, Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. He said it was the same PFUJ which was represented in the wage board. The Apnec chairman said I.H. Rashid, president of PFUJ, had represented the journalists before the wage board.
Advocate Akram Shaikh said there were two groups in the PFUJ and he was representing PFUJ (Dastoor). He said he had filed caveat seven months ago and no objection was raised at that time. He said it was unfortunate that such a division was created among the workers and it would only strengthen the cause of employers.
He said it was a constitutional petition and union of any of the newspaper organization could present its view point.
At this point, the court comprising Chief Justice Shaikh Riaz Ahmad, Justice Mian Mohammad Ajmal and Justice Mohammad Nawaz Abbasi, rose observing that everybody was free to give his view point.
