ISLAMABAD, April 23: The government has approved an amount of Rs10 million for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) to upgrade existing hospital facilities, an informed source told Dawn.
Pims had recently sent an urgent message to the government to immediately furnish Rs39 million to facelift and improve its deteriorating infrastructure.
The amount was released recently and the hospital was also assured that the rest of the amount would be released soon. The hospital should immediately begin rectification work.
Federal Health Minister Mohammad Nasir Khan in one of his visits to the hospitals of the federal capital had expressed displeasure over the state of affairs in the hospital and had directed the management to immediately improve the general environment of the institution.
In response, Pims had asked the government to provide Rs39 million so that the improvements suggested by the minister and also identified by the hospital management could be undertaken.
The hospital has already initiated renovation of different departments on the assurance of the government that the required funds would be provided.
Work to improve emergency and casualty ward was already in progress while bathrooms of Medical VI, emergency wards and the ICU were being tiled.
The management has also purchased cleaning trollies on the directive of the minister to continuously clean the floors of the hospital. In addition, four pickers have been appointed to lift trash and other items from the hospital.
Pims administration has also asked the CDA to construct public toilets in the hospital. The source said the whitewashing of the hospital would also be done after the rest of the amount was released. The toilets of the general wards would also be tiled. The conditions of the bathrooms of the general wards were the worst with unbearable stink and running taps.
The repair work on the dilapidated false ceiling, which was also due, would also be initiated. The ceiling, due to leakage, has either turned pale, brown or has worn out in many places.
The amount would also be used for the repair and maintenance of beds.
Nursing stations in all the wards would also be improved.
