Muzaffar steals riding honours

KARACHI, April 20: Jockey Muzaffar Hussain, owner M.R. Hussain and trainer M. Pervaiz, shared the racing limelight, finishing the afternoon’s programme with a brace of winners apiece, at the Summer Gymkhana Meeting held on Sunday at the Karachi Race Course.

Muzaffar had his moments of glory, when he piloted the grey colt Mera Jugnoo to a fine victory in the fourth event, collaring front runner Great Bakht half a furlong from the winning post.

The young rider then registered another victory in the next event, riding home the chestnut filly Strike The Gold, making his bid for victory from the outside. to overtake the front runners Knight Fighter, Love Land and Black Magic in the home stretch.

Owner M.R. Hussain and trainer M. Pervaiz, had their moments of triumph when Mera Jugno won the fourth race and duo followed it up with another stunning victory with Jugni in the seventh event.

The chestnut filly penalised to carry a heavy load of 9-5 on her back with Tariq Mehmood in the saddle, made every post a winning one chased all the way past the winning post by Defence Academy, Sarazen and High Standard.

In the opener, the bay horse Tipu fight ridden by M. Mazhar, registered another thumping win, grabbing the honours in this race by one and half lengths from Little Sunny, trying runaway tactics.

Outsider Bull Dancer, partnered by promising riding boy Tariq Baran, never gave the connections any nervous moments, taking over the running when heads turned for home, with Canon Again, Rich Valiant and the raging favourite Auzy, ridden by M. Yousuf completing the frame.

So disgraceful was Yousuf in the saddle that he resembled a clown on horseback at a circus. Auzy could have easily won the race but instead finished a very bad fourth. Yet the rider was not called up by the Stewards for an explanation for his disgraceful stint in the saddle.

Syed Ali Gohar Shah’s bay filly Caesar’s Palace, after a putrid run only last week, won the third race on the afternoon’s racing card like a champion. Ridden by evergreen S. Khan, Caesar’s Palace made short work of Sweet Grandy, Mark and Prism Of Life.

Another rip off as witnessed in the sixth event, when Ray Of Light ridden by Abdul Jabbar, a good second last week and now with a big chance to win this race, was scuttled by Jabbar to finish a very poor fourth. The Stewards were informed about antics Jabbar was about to perform before the race began. They did say that they would caution the rider, but that caution never came.

With a lot of grumbling adrift after the race, two offending riders were called up to the Glass Room but were never seen by the Stewards. Instead the learned gentlemen in the Glass Room told the Stipendary Steward to revoke the licenses of these two riders for an indefinite period.

The race was won by Mickey Mikdo II partnered by Mujhid Ali, with Keen Winner, ridden by Muzaffar Hussain, finishing a good second.

The curtain unfurled on this tiring programme, when S.M. Wasi Zaidi’s thoroughbred chestnut filly Sweet Touch, making her appearance on this track after nearly three months with Imamdin with the reins, won the concluding event.
