Dahis Again lucky to win by default

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, April 16: Eight-year-old long shot bay Dahis Again was lucky to grab on objection the feature event run over 1200 metres during the midweek  Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

Earlier, the race was won by fancied Khan Bahadur ridden by riding boy M. Zeeshan. Khan Bahadur had surged ahead in the late charge but in the process he caused serious interference to front-running Al Jarrar (Javed Iqbal) and Dahis Again (Mohsin Ali) who were squeezed out. Dahis Again managed to nose out Al Jarrar to third position on the finishing line. Thank You Boss completed the frame.

After the race riders of second and third placed horses Dahis Again and Al Jarrar lodged separate objections against the winner for dangerously crossing without being two lengths ahead and  thus hampering their running. The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards after long deliberations, viewing video-tape and from their own observation upheld the objections and awarded the  race to second placed Dahis Again. Khan Bahadur was disqualified and his rider M. Zeeshan stood down from riding for two weeks.

Khan Bahadur became the second casualty after the strict enforcement  of crossing rule no 183 (V) which states”  While crossing the rider must be two clear lengths in front”. The first was My Home  Land on April 13 last. On both  the  occasions of crossing, the riders failed to abide by the said rule condition.

A race earlier, 40 to 100 favourite White Line ran out a very impressive  winner in the fourth and supporting  event contested over 1200 metres.

Five-year-old roan, White Line was smartly piloted home by jockey Salah-ud-Din (II). He beat Sun Of Gold  by one-and-three quarters of a length. Roxanne and Sky Hawk completed the board among six runners.

Racing fans enjoyed competitive racing in which two favourites and a second favourite obliged in a small card of five  events. Raad  in the opener and the lucky Dahis Again in the fifth and last race were the two long shot to win in afternoon races. All events were contested over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres.
