Waqar IV surprise Lipton


KARACHI, April 15: Waqar IV comprising Shahid Abedi, Waqar Hasan, Shoaib and Cmdr, Sami surprised the favourite Lipton in the last round to claim the honour of the week.

Sixteen teams contested weekly Swiss Bridge programme under the auspices of Karachi Bridge Association.

Waqar collecting maximum victory points, but they were given tough time by more experienced Candyland in the 2nd round when the latter returned with a positive score of 23 against 7 V.P.

However this proved a boon to Waqar since they saw Aces in the third round and once again collected 25 as against 3, when Aces fell to their own aggression.

Strikers could not stop them in the fourth round and went fighting down 22-8. In the last round they faced Lipton and after exchange of brilliant bids and table plays, surprised the experience side 20-10 to win the title of the week.

Lipton with Saleem, Tariq Rasheed Khan, Mrs Zeenat Azwer and Ghufran finished on second berth with a score of 96 Victory Points. They first lost to EFU 14-16 and then last to Waqar, won 2nd to 4th round matches from Friends 25-5, Waqar 23-7, Bhurgari 18-12 and Sprinters 16-14.

Earlier in the Pairs Event, it was Dinaz Dubash-Azwar pair which claimed top position with a handsome score of 63 percent in the Senior section.

Hassan Sajjad-Yousuf Gheewala once again shown consistency in their form finishing second with 61 percent followed by Khalid and Ghufran 59 percent score.

In the other house, Irfan Khan-Tanvir Mazahir left others pair far behind outing up an impressive performance to win the title of the week with a score of 62 percent. Yasmin Vohra and Ghaffar Cochinwala finished on second berth with 60 percent and Nasir-Shahab finished third.—PPI
