Sehwag set to lead India today

DHAKA, April 15: India coach John Wright on Tuesday said the team was likely to see quite a few changes, including a new captain, for their next match of the three-nation tournament here.

“Captain (Saurav) Ganguly is likely to rest a strained back, in which case (Virender) Sehwag will lead,” Wright said ahead of the match against Bangladesh on Wednesday.

Sehwag, who has played 70 One-day International, was named vice-captain in the absence of five frontline players including Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

The stand-in skipper may, however, have to make way for wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel at the top of the batting-order.

“Parthiv has not got to bat much in recent matches, so he might be promoted, even as opener,” said Wright. “We are encouraged by the performances of youngsters and plan to give them more chances.”

Paceman Zaheer Khan has been ruled out of the match with a pulled hamstring and is likely to be replaced by rookie Avishkar Salvi or all-rounder Sanjay Bangar.

“Zaheer will miss the next match and also probably the last league match against South Africa as a precautionary measure,” said Wright, who joined the team on Sunday after making a trip to New Zealand on his father’s death.

The former Kiwi captain also indicated that off-spinner Sarandeep Singh would play instead of either Harbhajan Singh or leg-spinner Amit Mishra.

India have won both their previous matches, defeating Bangladesh by 199 runs and South Africa by 153 runs.

The tournament is being played on a double-league format with the top two teams making the final scheduled for Sunday.—AFP
