Security issues discussed

By Our Reporter

RAWALPINDI, April 15: The participants of the two-day 56th formation commanders conference were briefed on the concluding day here on Tuesday about the internal and external security environment of Pakistan by Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Ehsan ul Haque.

Director-General Military Operation Maj-Gen Ashfaque Pervaiz Kiani apprised the participants of the operational situation after which the formation commanders reviewed the operational preparedness of the Pakistan army.

The conference which was held at the General Headquarters was presided over by President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

According to ISPR, President Musharraf in his opening remarks referred to Wapda’s performance, saying it had eliminated problems created by a previous government involved in making ‘deals’ with IPPs which were front-loaded and unfair.

He explained that three years ago Wapda was earning about Rs90 billion which went up to Rs185 billion per annum. It was due to this increased earning that Wapda was able to pay Rs116 billion to the IPPs this year.

The president also spoke of the improvement in the KESC which was losing Rs1.2 billion per month three years ago but by June 2003 was able to break even.

Gen Musharraf said the Ghazi Brotha project would start next month and would produce 1,450MW of electricity. He mentioned how government had moved to establish a coal-fired project in Thar which would not only produce 600MW of power but would also contribute to the development and poverty alleviation in Sindh.

At the end, President Musharraf and participants of the conference witnessed a display in which various indigenous improvements and developments in weapons and equipment had been incorporated.
