Eight killed in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, April 14: Seven Kashmiri fighters and an army soldier died in violence in occupied Kashmir, police said on Monday.

Army soldiers shot dead three freedom fighters in a gunbattle in Poonch district southwest of Srinagar. An Indian army soldier and four Kashmiris were killed in separate gunbattles across the Himalayan region, police said.

They said six civilians were wounded on Monday in a grenade attack and a bomb blast in Srinagar. Separately, Indian and Pakistani troops on Sunday night exchanged artillery and small arms fire across the LoC.

“The shells fired by Pakistan landed in Kharbu, Kaksar and Batalik areas near LoC,” a police official said.

There was no immediate word on any casualties from the shelling.—Reuters
