Proteas rout Bangladesh to give Smith first win

DHAKA, April 14: South Africa crushed Bangladesh by 83 runs in the triangular series on Monday to give Graeme Smith his first victory as captain.

South Africa piled up 294 for three before dismissing the hosts for 211 as both sides looked to bounce back from heavy defeats by India in their opening matches of the tournament.

Boeta Dippenaar top-scored for South Africa with an unbeaten 66 from 80 balls and Neil McKenzie hammered 55, including two fours and one six, the pair sharing an unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership of 105.

Herschelle Gibbs and Smith gave South Africa a good start with a 112-run opening partnership, but they were separated when the skipper was stumped by Khaled Mashud off slow left-armer Mohammad Rafique after hitting eight fours in his 45.

Gibbs made 62 at a run-a-ball, including 10 fours, before being run out by a good piece of fielding from Javed Omar at mid-on.

Rafique also forced Jacques Rudolph (44) to give a catch to debutant Tareq Aziz Khan at gully and finished with respectable figures of two for 43.

Opener Mohammad Ashraful, who made 114 on his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2000, led the Bangladesh reply with 52 in 94 balls, including seven fours, an innings that earned him the Man-of-the-Match award.

Bangladesh skipper Khaled Mahmud made a run-a-ball 40, including six fours, but the South African seamers were always in control.

Shaun Pollock, sacked as captain last month after the team’s poor World Cup showing, completed figures of four for 36, Alan Dawson took three wickets and Makhaya Ntini two.

Bangladesh play India again on Wednesday.
