KARACHI: CPSP de-recognizes medical institutions

KARACHI, April 14: The College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan has de-recognized different medical institutions accredited by it for postgraduate training due to non-payment of stipend to FCPS-11 trainees.

Lady Dufferin Hospital, Karachi; Alvi Dental Hospital, Karachi and Akhtar Eye Hospital, Karachi, are among the medical institutions de-recognized by the CPSP.

The college had decided that in the private sector, no unpaid training slot would be accredited and the institutions charging fee from the trainees will be de-recognized for FCPS training.

A mandatory payment, equivalent to basic pay of BPS-17, was also prerequisite to be paid by relevant institutions to the FCPS-II trainees as a stipend.

Eligibility for appearing in FCPS-II exam includes successful completion of prescribed training in accredited institutions under the guidance of a supervisor approved by CPSP.

It was recommended that one trainer should have maximum of eight trainees at a time and there should be 40 beds for 16 trainees in a slot with two or three supervisors.

Meanwhile, the CPSP has also withdrawn accreditation of several departments of different medical college and hospitals for not inducting trainees for FCPS-II training despite passage of considerable time.

The college has, however, assured to review the status after receiving necessary information from the concerned medical colleges.

The departments from whom accreditation has been withdrawn included psychiatry, hematology, dermatology, histopathology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery and urology departments of the CMH; dentistry and clinical pharmacology departments of DMC; anaesthesiology, community medicine, orthopaedic surgery and psychiatry departments of BMC and cardiology and otorhinolaryngology, ENT departments of Liaquat University of Medical Health Sciences, Jamshoro.—PPI
